Permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattooing, micropigmentation, or derma-pigmentation, is a cosmetic procedure that uses pigments to create the appearance of makeup on the face, such as eyeliner, eyebrows, and lip color. It's a way to achieve long-lasting cosmetic effects without the need for daily application.
Pigmentation:
Pigments are placed into the dermis (the layer of skin beneath the epidermis) using a specialized tool, similar to a tattoo machine, but with lighter needle depths and smaller needles.
Sessions:
Depending on a service: Brows needed 2 sessions/ visit to complete the desired look and 4-6 weeks apart. Lips can vary from 2-3 sessions, 6-8 weeks apart and Eyeliner from 1-2 sessions, 6-8 weeks apart.
Natural Look:
The goal is to create a natural, subtle effect that resembles makeup, rather than a harsh, unnatural look.
Healing Time:
The healing process is generally faster than traditional tattooing, typically taking 4-6 weeks for brows and 6-8 weeks for lips and eyeliner and is less painful due to the shallower penetration and thinner needles used.
Different Techniques:
Various techniques are used, such as microshading (for eyebrows), lip blushing, eyeliner, and more.
Convenience:
Permanent makeup provides a time-saving solution for those who want to avoid daily makeup application.
Appearance Enhancement:
It can enhance facial features, such as making eyebrows appear fuller, creating eyeliner lines, or adding color to lips.
Medical Purposes:
Permanent makeup is also used for medical purposes, such as camouflaging scars, restoring color to skin after surgery, or creating areola and nipple tattoos after breast cancer surgery.
Allergy Relief:
For some, it's an alternative for those with allergies to topical makeup ingredients.
Semi-Permanent:
While called "permanent," the pigments used in permanent makeup are bioresorbable and will fade over time, typically lasting 2-3 years.
Touch-Ups:
Touch-ups may be needed to maintain the desired look and to renew the colour.
Whilst body tattoos are known for being particularly painful, Permanent Makeup is not a painful procedure. Most clients would rate the sensation a 3 out of 10, or compare it to having your brows tweezered. Topical numbing agents are used to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment.
General Pre-Care (2-4 weeks before procedure):
Sun Protection:
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds to prevent sunburn and skin damage, which can affect the procedure and healing.
Skincare:
Refrain from using retinoids (Retin-A, retinol), chemical peels, exfoliants, and harsh chemicals (like AHAs/BHAs) as they can irritate the skin.
Hydration:
Drink plenty of water and keep your skin moisturized to help it heal properly.
Specific Pre-Care (1-2 weeks before procedure):
Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, plucking, or electrolysis in the treatment area.
Medications: Consult your technician about medications you're taking, particularly blood thinners like aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can increase bleeding during the procedure.
Day of Procedure:
Hygiene: Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin.
Mobility: If getting eyeliner, arrange for transportation as you may experience drowsiness or light sensitivity.
Restrictions: Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and certain supplements (like fish oil) that can thin the blood.
Additional Tips:
Consultation:
Have a consultation with the technician to discuss your skin, concerns, and any pre-existing conditions.
Diet & Sleep:
Eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep to support your body's healing process.
Communication:
Be open and honest with your technician about any medications or conditions you have.
While the same as brow pre-care instructions, there are some additional instruction for lip tattoo appointment.
Detailed Pre-Care Instructions:
Exfoliation:
Gently exfoliate your lips daily for a week or two before your appointment. Use a lip scrub, warm wet towel, or a homemade scrub with sugar and honey. This helps remove dead skin and creates a smooth surface for pigment implantation.
Moisturizing:
Keep your lips and surrounding area moisturized throughout the day with a lip balm or ointment like Vaseline.
Hydration:
Drink plenty of water to keep your lips hydrated and improve pigment retention.
Lip Products:
Avoid using lipstick or lip gloss for 48 hours before.
Other Procedures:
Avoid chemical peels, injections, or other skin treatments in the lip area for a few weeks prior.
Cold Sores:
If you have a history of cold sores, consult with your doctor about taking antiviral medication like Valtrex.
As a necessary precaution, you MUST take an anti-viral medication for a total of 5 days (2 days prior to procedure, 1 day-of, and 2 days post-procedure). Examples of antiviral medications: Zovirax, Famvir or Valtrex. There are absolutely NO exceptions to this rule! This rule holds true for each and every time you have any lip tattoo. You will need to contact your physician/ pharmacy in order to obtain your prescription strength anti-viral medication. You must inform them of your decision to have permanent cosmetics applied to your lips and they will need to call your prescription in for you to pick up at your pharmacy.
Arrive Makeup-Free:
Arrive at your appointment with a makeup-free face, including no lipstick or lip makeup.
For Lip Tattoo:
HEALING:
Lip blush a.k.a lip tattoo lasts about 2-3 years before needing a colour refresh, and heals the most quickly of all permanent makeup procedures!
You can expect to feel some tenderness for about 24-48 hours post-procedure, and your lips will be fully healed in 5-10 days.
However, if you have dermal fillers, you should expect to see more swelling immediately after the procedure, so you may want to avoid booking any important events right after your procedure.
The initial colour you see will lighten by about 50% within 7 days of the procedure. Over the next 3-6 weeks, the colour will soften and become even more natural-looking as it settles into your lip tissue.
Your healed result is completely customizable! We can create a barely-there, subtle enhancement OR we can give you a more defined shape and colour. The choice is yours!
IMPORTANT: You will need to obtain preventative medication to take 1-2 days before and after your procedure. This can be easily obtained at your local pharmacy, or from your family doctor (Valtrex or similar).
For Brows Tattoo:
Healing:
Brows take 10-14 days to fully heal. During this time, you must not use makeup in the brow area, and should avoid using anything but a gentle cleanser and ointment as instructed by your artist.
You will also need to avoid excessive UV exposure on your face for 10 days of healing. After you have finished peeling, you may resume normal outdoor activities as long as you are diligent about applying sunscreen!
Avoid extreme sweating/saunas/hot tubs for at least 1 week after your appointment.
For Eyeliner Tattoo:
Healing:
Eyeliner healing takes about 10 days, and has the easiest heal of all available permanent makeup procedures. Simply skip all use of eye makeup for a week-and-a-half (10 days), keep the area clean and dry, and then you’ll be all set with gorgeous liner that lasts!
Important Notes for Permanent Eyeliner services:
Must not use lash growth serums for a minimum of 8 weeks before the procedure
NO lash extensions during the procedure - please have them removed at least 72hrs before your appointment. Also wait until all the sessions are done and when your eye lids are all healed up.
This procedure cannot be performed on those who have glaucoma.
Contact lenses must be removed before the procedure, but can be put when the swelling has gone down (24-48 hours).
Deposit is mandatory to reserve your appointment and non-refundable. We ask that you give us 48 hours notice if you need to cancel your appointment, no need for another deposit with proper notice.
